Forest

Forest

There we all were
Sitting around like nobody noticed
I was dying
But we sang and held each other
And the moon laughed at her pain
The stars winked at her distress and
I was dying
While the fire snickered at our fears
The forest mocked our calls for help
The night breeze joked about our loneliness
And I was dying
It rained every day except
The last night we were there
And we screamed at each other
Tossing pain at one another like daggers
Piercing through the perfect night air
And the sidewalk whispered behind our backs
While the buildings watched as we deconstructed ourselves
As I was dying
We were just sitting around
So sure
So supremely confident that
All the earth
Every moon, every star, every fire, forest, breeze and sidewalk
Were so invested in us
That they watched- that they cared
Or even knew we were ever living
Amongst them
They lived before us and
Will carry on without us
But tonight, my friends,
My aching love
My temporary soul,
I am dying.
And we lived
One more night.
